Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Growth, Purpose, and Pugs
As we near the close of 2024, I’ve found myself pausing to reflect on the year —both for me as a ceramic artist and for Wild Clay Cornwall as a small, meaningful business.
One of the moments that stands out most vividly is selling my very first ceramic pug. It was a labour of love, taking hours to sculpt every little wrinkle and paint its endearing expression. Pugs have such quirky, lovable personalities, and I wanted this piece to reflect that. But what made it truly special was knowing that 20% of its sale would go directly to BubbleBecca Pug Rescue and Sanctuary. This incredible charity works tirelessly to rescue pugs who’ve been abandoned, ill-treated, and saved from the desperate and heartbreaking conditions of disgraceful Chinese markets. Supporting them feels like a way to channel my creativity into something so important and rewarding, so expect to see lots more pugs in 2025!
Another shift this year has been in how I approach firing my ceramics. I’ve been moving toward single firing—a "low and slow" process that skips the usual two or even three firings. It’s not only kinder to the environment but also feels more in tune with the kind of world I want to help create for future generations. Knowing I’m reducing energy consumption, even in a small way, brings a sense of purpose to my practice.
This ethos extends to my SOS collection, which is also single-fired. These pieces are inspired by Cornwall’s stunning marine life and coastlines, and I donate 5% of each sale to Marine Conservation UK through the Work for Good platform. It’s my small contribution to protecting the ocean and its incredible ecosystems.
Looking back, 2024 has been a milestone year. I launched my website (finally!) and took significant steps toward aligning my art with causes that matter deeply to me. It’s been a good year—one that’s left me feeling both proud and grateful.
And as I look ahead to 2025, I’m excited to start a new chapter. I’m planning to introduce more wheel thrown practical household items like cups and bowls—pieces that are not only beautiful but also functional, bringing a touch of handmade charm to everyday life.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me this year, whether by purchasing a piece, liking a post, or sharing kind words. It’s your encouragement that makes this journey so fulfilling.
In these troubling times, a broken country and unstable world, here’s to a brighter and even more creative 2025! Happy Christmas everyone x
